When it comes to love, dogs get it. They incorporate all the most important aspects of a loving relationship with ease:
Unconditional love
Forgiveness
Enthusiasm
Playfulness
Affection
Acceptance
Loyalty
So for our upcoming holiday of amore, Valentine's Day, I'd like to honor our dogs' superior capabilities in the love department by holding a contest. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me why you love your dog and what you do to show it. I will select the best answer (based on my own humble opinion) and announce the winner on Friday. The winner will receive a signed copy of Let's Have a Dog Party! by PETA's president, Ingrid Newkirk, which I blogged about in October, and a six-pack of doggie heart toys, which contain both squeakers and crinklers (a big hit with my dogs!) from the House of Dog.
The deadline is Valentine's Day (this Thursday). I look forward to reading your heartwarming comments!

There is no better companion than Dori, my beautiful rotweiler-husky-labrador mix. During the event of my grandmothers death, Dori restored a sense of playfulness and hope to my family and I with her playful antics and affection. Her loyalty and compassion has helped me through so much of my life, and through my battle with depression she has given me a sense of hope that there is more to life than darkness. Her funny disposition, energy and love have all helped me get through some of the most troublesome times of my life, and I would love nothing more to give her a treat for Valentine's day to my most wonderful friend!

Why do I love my dog? Let me count the ways..
My (almost) 2 year old pug Ginger is my best friend in the whole world. She is funny, loveable and intellegent. She makes me laugh and comforts me when I am sick. I have Crohn's disease and anytime she sees me sick she lays with me and doesn't move.. even when I hug her soooo tight!
The other night my husband and I were about to go to sleep (with Ginger in our bed, of course). She usually plops down right in the middle of us and we fight over who is going to snuggle with her. Well, she choose for us.. she laid with her head right on my arm so I could hug her all night. I fell asleep with the biggest smile on my face. Even through pins and needles in my arm throughout the night I still had smile on my face everytime I woke up and saw her next to me. She is one of the best things to ever happen to me. I tell my husband all the time that I hope I love our child as much because I can't see it being possible to love anything as much as I love my dog, Ginger!

I love my dog Libby simply because she is the one. I searched for almost two years for the right dog for me. During those two years I met many wonderful, loving dogs but it always just felt like they were someone else's dogs. Then one day my mother saw her picture online, she was at the local pound and her time was running out. When mom called me and told me to look at the website, they had a beautiful black lab in need there. I thought to myself, "don't get your hopes up" From the moment I saw her picture I could feel it in my heart. She was MY dog! Libby came to live with me and has been by my side ever since. We truly are linked at the heart. When I'm sad you can see the pain on her face. When I'm happy she transforms into "giddy puppy" mode. When she is in pain, I feel it in my chest. I am most relaxed when all 70lbs of lab are spread on top of me while laying on the couch...because it is then that I can feel her heartbeat in my chest, that is where it belongs as this dog is my heart and I am empty without her.

My husband and I are blessed to have the love of two furry babies in our life, Hank, a Dalmatian mix, and Bluebelle, a Lab/Rottie mix. We have had Hank since he was a baby and he is now 6, and Blue who we think is around 3 was adopted almost one year ago. They are absolutely the light of our lives and we consider them our children. We take every chance we get to spoil them beyond reproach and they live the life that I think all babies should live which includes much pampering and treating them like members of the family. We are even working on moving to another house so we can get them a larger fenced in yard. We are worse than parents with a new baby with all of the stories we tell about them to anyone who will listen. Everyday when I get home it is “crazy time”; that is the time when we, all four of us, run around all around the inside of the house yelling whoo whoo, barking, and jumping just having a great time just celebrating the fact that Mommy is home. This is followed by everyone piling on the bed and giving kisses while we tell them how much we missed them while we were away. My husband says his entrances are never like mine, but hey they have to save up their energy for when Mommy gets home. I could not imagine my life without my babies and I would not want to. Once we move to our new home we will expand our family by adopting from the local shelter, and I can’t wait to welcome a new addition to our family.

I have spinal cord problems that affect all four limbs. I walk on a rolling walker, wear bilateral hand braces and occasionally leg braces as well. My body is covered by numerous surgical scars and my mobility is limited. Humans look at me that way too -- seeing the DISability before the incredible heart. My life revolves around my rescued dogs, most of which are (like me) "special needs". If I were in a shelter, I would be a "throw-away" or the first on the euth list. But in my dogs' eyes, I am disABLEd, I am PERFECT. It doesn't matter if my hands shake as long as they stroke the fear or pain away. I see perfection when others see blindness, deafness, old age, abuse or neglect. Every day of their lives they thank me for giving them a loving, adoring forever home... and every day I thank God that I was chosen for them. :)

It was love at first sight with Howie-before that if you count seeing his face on the shelter's Website. I'm not sure who picked who, so I think it's safe to say we picked each other! Not even the adorable ten-week-old puppy in the run next door could catch my eye once I got there and took Howie for a walk. He sat down once outside and very politely offered me his paw-take my hand and I'll be yours. And so he is-my best friend.
Howie-the shy, frightened dog we saw at the shelter-is in training to become a certified therapy dog. If he can do for someone else a smidgen of what he's done for me then he will improve someone else's life too. He's such an indelible part of my life, but soon I'll share him with others. Thank you, Howie.

Dickens showed up in my life out of the blue, 4 days after my mate, Einstein, abruptly left the Earth. Dickens is a Husky, coincidently with teardrops at the corners of his eyes. Dickens has brought “child’s play” back into my 50 year life, insisting on a game of tag and herding “his” feisty felines. All of life is a game, and with each game there is a fun kind of learning, like being with a childhood friend on the playground. He’s a flirt. He’s a cuddler. He’s the hero of his own life, and shows me how to be the same for myself, together on a journey but having very different trips.
He’s a vulnerable boy, with wild ways that can land him in lethal trouble in this world, and I maintain clear boundaries–not to dominate and control him, but to keep him safe. In this lifestyle he gets opportunities to discover the creative parts of himself that help him not be a prisoner to domestication, but to find new freedoms because of his circumstance. Approaching him without “already knowing,” discovering him as Dickens, a unique individual, not just as “a dog,” is the most special gift of all.
And, of course, with all this philosophy, he always likes a good chew, which I am happy to provide for the pleasure of his company.

I love my rottweiler because she is perfect! She is sweet, smart, and loving. She sleeps in my bed with me every night. We both are vegans and she loves to help me cook. She also will shake your hand. She is about 3 years old, 2 years ago we got another dog and italian mastiff that my brother did not want. My rottweiler Zoey adopted our new puppy Onyx as her own. My 2 not so little girls think they are really related and I refuse to be the one to tell them they are not. I show my dogs how much I love them by baking them homemade vegan dog biscuits and walking and playing with them. I also love to travel with my dogs to the mountains to play in the fresh air. My rottweiler also loves my 4 year old mini lop ear rabbit, she thinks he is her older brother and she steals his bunny food. :)

Our Lucy Bear
This dog has brought so much joy into the life of our little family...heck, she MADE our little family.
Found on Craigslist and about to head to a shelter because her old momma couldnt take care of her anymore, Lucy has been a joy. A border collie/ boxer mix, she is the perfect combination of INTENSITY and pure, goofy LOVE :) I love her for the times she looks out the window for hours on end, for the times she curls up in the crook of my legs in bed in the morning, and for our daily runs in Downtown Seattle as she "protects" me.
I show my love the traditional ways. Treats (veggies and peanut butter to be exact), extensive belly rubs, outings to play Chuckee Ball, Frisbee and to the many dog parks in the area. But the number one way we show our love to her is by treating her like family. My fiance and I have become so much closer in bonding over our little girl, and she is the best practice for a future "human" baby we're going to have one day.

Moms mutts!
My two girls Gracie girl and dirty Gertie were both adopted from shelters. They are the most patient and forgiving creatures. They give me humor, excitement, unconditional love, and energy! Hopefully I return these same aspects to them!
We share our love in many ways. Every night we have our special time together. They get sweet potato chews, and what I like to call 'serious' snuggles..haha. I am also a firm believer in 'dogs need weekends to.' So usually I try to spend most of my weekends with my girls doing something eventful. Our daily walks are also one of my favorite bonding times as well.
These two dogs have changed my life. They are my friends, my family. Their affection, and non judgmental characters are what get me through some of the hardest days.<3

I love my Bruce with all my heart! He is the best little dog I ever had! He's always there to lick my tears when I am sad or lonely!
I got Bruce after a year i moved to a new city to be with my ex-boyfriend. I got Bruce when me and ex were having trouble in our relationship...we thought a puppy will make the situation better, but it didn't...But loving Bruce made me realized that I want to be a responsible parent and break free from the unhappy life we shared!
After the break up, I was depressed and lonely! But every morning Bruce was there to leak my tears and gave me a reason to get up and walk him and go to work!!
After 2 years, we have finally built a wonderful new life together! I found a man who loves me and is the perfect loving father for Bruce!
I tell Bruce I love him every day and he returns his love to me with countless kisses!!

Words could never describe how much I love my dog. She is just like one of my children. In fact, I refer to her as the sister of my other daughters, and they do too!
She is beautiful, sweet, loving and a wonderful friend to my husband and me. She is wonderful company and never complains (except when she is hungry, which runs in the family anyway). She has made our lives whole, and I am thankful for Scarlet every day.

My dog Chevy has surpassed all my expections of a dog. Not only is he loyal, playful, and loving but he exceeds in all areas. Chevy is with me at all times. One day when I was showering Chevy even jumped in the shower in an attempt to be with me. I now leave him in the hall, but he lays in front of the door waiting for me to lavish him with attention when I'm done. He is by far the best dog I have had, and of everyone in my life he is the best Valentine.

My two best friends are named Pupe and Perchan. They are both rescue dogs and I'm sure than even amongst dogs rescued dogs
are even better to show affection and love for life.
I love them for so many reasons some are:
1) They make me laugh even when I come home late at night tired and fed up with everything
2) Pupe loves to play with her toys and watching her just puts everything right no matter the kind of day I had.
3) My old Perchan always reminds that I have to be brave he's a survivor of so much pain but still is always happy.
He has teach me to let go of everything that hurts and to concentrate on the present.
I love them because although I'm not a perfect mum they know I always do my best to have them in the place they
have always deserved a real home with lots of love, food, toys and a comfy bed where we all watch tv and spend
lazy saturday mornings.
I just can't imagine my life without them.
Ps I live in Mexico City I read the terms and conditions and I think I can participate but even if I can't I just wanted to
tell you all why I love my doggies sooooo much. Thanks

I love all three of my four legged companions equally with all of my heart, Grizzly (Rottweiler/Labrador, Rocky (Golden Retriever/Labrador)and Snuggles (Tabby). They are the loves of my life as I believe I am theirs! No furniture is off limits! (Thank goodness for sofa covers!) We were meant to be together. They are the reason I checked out PETA's website and from the next day became a vegetarian! I love all animals and can't ever imagine what unwanted animals or factory farm animals go through. I just look at my companions eyes and to see their compassion, understanding and love through their eyes, I don't know how people hurt animals! Between the very expensive vet bills, the one year of clothing destroyed, the three sofa sets I have changed in the last five years, the electronics I had to rewire, the list goes on and on, I will NEVER abandon them for any reason in the world. They help me take care of myself through exercise (I walk them every night for at least an hour and half) and I try to be the best mom in the world! Apparently I am hard to beat according to my family and friends! We help eachother find our way! I can't imagine my life without them.

Why do I love my chihuahua, Benson? Because ever since I rescued him from a backyard breeder, he has done nothing but bring joy and love to my life. He has had many health scares due to his past neglegt, but I would sell my house and car both if thats what it took to care for him. Every day he sits next to me with his chin on my arm-staring at me with love in his big brown eyes.Im too late to enter for the prize-but I already have the best prize of all...my precious baby.
