Christmas Returns

Santa comes quietly long before dawn
While shops are still busy and lights are still on
While dinners are simmering and kitchens are warm
And children count presents they'll open by morn.

He slips past the trees and the windows aglow
Through the gate to the back yard as icy winds blow
To find the pup that he brought last year chained up in the snow
And kneeling he whispers, "Are you ready to go?"

There are too many stops like this one tonight
Before the beginning of his regular flight.
He leaves not a note nor a footprint in sight
Just an unbuckled collar on a cold Christmas night.

Laura F. :

That poem is so sad, and the picture of that poor dog on the two-foot chain, in the snow, and all alone makes me so mad. I don't know how people can do this to an animal and sleep at night. Please don't bring an animal into your life, unless you really do plan to bring it into your life, meaning into your home as part of your family. There is absolutely no excuse for allowing a dog to live like this, cold and alone and suffering.

Thank you for posting this poem. Too many people forget the ones that depend the most on them: their companion animals. Keep an eye out for chained dogs. If their situation looks dire (thin, obviously injured, no food, no water, no shelter) PLEASE call your local animal control to report the situation. Be an angel for those animals.

I got my first dog as a christmas present and It was the best gift I have ever recieved by far. But I agree that If youre not, without a doubt, sure that the dog will be cared for properly you should not get the dog.
